@TraderMD discussing Triage in Medicine as with Trading

Triagenoun

a. the sorting of patients (as in an emergency room) according to the urgency of their need for care

b. the assigning of priority order to projects on the basis of where funds and other resources can be best used, are most needed, or are most likely to achieve success

In the traditional sense, triage is a skill used by an ER physician. Triage involves applying resources (time, human capital, possibly medical supplies) to where they are most critically needed towards desired outcomes. For example (much more eloquently stated on wiki):

At its most primitive, those responsible for the removal of the wounded from a battlefield or their care afterwards have divided victims into three categories:

  • Those who are likely to live, regardless of what care they receive;
  • Those who are likely to die, regardless of what care they receive;
  • Those for whom immediate care might make a positive difference in outcome

Triage is also a skill that traders are frequently having to deal with in multiple respects.

WordSpy’s definition of information triage was highlighted by Barry Ritholtz at The Big Picture a few months back:

Information triage is the continuous process by which we refine the information we gather, paying most attention to the information that is most valuable and identifying additional information we want to procure.
—”Information Triage,” Notes About Notes, January 1, 2010 (approx)

Traders are constantly busy sorting through mounds of data. Be that a newsfeed, your twitter stream and the signals your charts may or may not be giving you.

Said another way, triage is the process of filtering what’s important at any given moment. What’s the most critical thing to attend to? What are the most crucial pieces of information?

Only some of this information is critical for that very moment. Given that we’re in somewhat of a news driven market now (especially with the Eurozone, Debt Ceiling, and earnings season) this is especially important during the recent and upcoming trading sessions.

Which information do you process now? Do you stop trading to read it? Is it something that you try to read up on the details of while actively trading? Can I afford to leave this for later?

Which do you read later? Is this relevant enough that it must be read by tomorrow? Can I file this away in the “to read later” collection of links? What if I’m running short on time for that particular post market session?

What are my best trading ideas? Which one of these trading ideas needs research, time, and/or capital now for it to be successful? Am I devoting the appropriate amount of resources to these ideas? Am I looking at too many research reports? Indicators? etc.

Triage not only helps you to focus in on what’s critical, it also helps you filter out the noise. At any given time there are numerous headlines, tweets, or trade ideas to entertain. An inappropriately high triage threshold may filter out some of your best information & ideas. A low threshold can spread you too thin and subject you to information overload.

Darren Miller has a good piece on Cognitive Load Theory:

Cognitive load, as the name would suggest, is how much working information an individual can consume in a given period.

Just as you were an ER physician, from moment to moment your threshold can change.

Triage is a skill that is often overlooked by traders, and like with any other skill, it has it’s own delicate balance.
